The Senanayake tank is located in the Ampara district. It was established in 1949 as a part of the Gal Oya development project and is the largest irrigation construction built after freedom from British imperialists. The Senanayake reservoir covers an area of 384 square miles. The earthen dam is 1100 meters in length and 43 meters in height. It provides irrigation water for generating electricity, controlling floods in the Gal Oya plain, and aquaculturing in freshwater. The surroundings of the Senanayake tank have been declared as a sanctuary, as it lies within the Gal Oya National Park.
