Arugam Bay

Located on the Eastern Coast of Sri Lanka, Arugam Bay is close to two major towns – Ampara and Monaragala. It is a small fishing village 3km south of the small town of Pottuvil at the southern end of the East Coast. There is a wide beach in front of the village that is appropriate for swimming throughout the year. Arugam Bay is considered to be the most suitable place for surfing in Sri Lanka and one of the best surf spots in the world. The best surfing is between April and September. The waves can be up to 1.6m high, therefore it is a good place to learn to surf. Pottuvil Point is the most suitable surf spot. The surrounding scenery is not insignificant. You can walk or cycle to the Crocodile Rock and Elephant Rock, about 3km south of the Bay. If you are lucky, you can spot elephants roaming around. On the edge of Pottuvil there are ancient ruins of Mudu Maha Vihara featuring a 3-metre high standing Buddha statue
