About Ampara

WHAT

Ampara is a small city rich with natural and historical landmarks. The majority of the population are Sinhalese. History of Ampara goes back to the 2nd century BC. It was first called Ambaragama then Ambara and finally Ampara. It was a hub city of the Eastern Province in the period of the first kingdom in Sri Lanka – the Digamadulla Kingdom. During the British colonial days in the late 1890s and early 1900, this area was a resting place for hunters. With the development of the Gal Oya scheme after 1949, Ampara was transformed into a town. It also suffered from the Sri Lankan Civil War.

Ampara is located about 360km from Colombo.

Ampara has many historical landmarks, which were constructed by foreign invaders, and picturesque natural sites. The highlights are Buddangala Monastery, Deegawapi Dagoba, Gal Oya National Park, Kadakkarai Palli, Japanese Peace Pagoda, Muslim Cultural Museum, Rajagala Monastery, Senanayaka Tank (Senanayaka Samudraya), Arugam Bay Beach, Muhudu Maha Viharaya, Panama Beach, Kudumbigala Monastery and Kumana Bird Sanctuary.
